High Speed Trains
The airlines are no where near scared enough about the possibility of trains taking over the flying market. Connections are still improving and so are the speeds of trains, but its still no where near that of a plane. When you think of traveling to LA to NY, you don't think train straight away do you? Smaller trips that use to be taken by planes are now starting to be dominated by trains, which is a good sign.
Trains will slowly get faster, networks will expand, overseas train travel will become more popular with more destinations are the infrastructure is put in place. This process has already taken place and is expanding rapidly, but we still live in a flying society. Europe I believe will be the first to really embrace train travel over plane travel.
These high speed trains have been operating in Europe for some time now, but it's still not beating plane travel. It has had an impact however, especially in places like France.
It may still be sometime before we see train travel possible from America to Europe, but will happen and I believe it will happen sooner rather then later. I believe trains will even catch up to the speeds planes are at now in a shorter space of time then we think is possible. Train travel is still the future in my opinion.
