Powering Model Trains Part 2

Because of the need for accuracy in the model train market, manufacturers started producing scale model trains on a two track system. The two wheels of the model train were now isolated from each other and each of the rails now carried a positive and negative supply of power. Much like a battery, but it won't run out.

The most common form of powered model train gets it power form direct current power with the same positive and negative charge on the two separate rails. Some model trains do use alternating current, which is what most household items run on. Marklin model trains and Lionel models are good examples of that.

The American Flyer uses alternating current, but on a two rail track not three like the Marklin and Lionel.

The earliest models of electric trains, model trains that is ran on batteries. Not all homes were powered by electricity at this time. These are rarely regarded as true model trains, but more toy trains. A model train does not run with a battery. They are how ever a good way to get young children involved in the model train hobby. Battery power is much safer for them.
